Preceptorship
UBC Okanagan School of Nursing provides students with the opportunity to prepare for the role of the newly graduated registered nurse by providing each fourth-year student with two preceptorships within the final semester of the BSN program.
The preceptorship model involves the participation of three people: the nurse preceptor, the student, and the faculty member. Communication between student, preceptor, and faculty member is key for the success of the preceptorship.
UBC Okanagan School of Nursing is grateful for the substantial service preceptors to provide to support the education and preparation of the BSN students.
A brief summary of the roles and responsibilities of the preceptor, student, and faculty member is provided below:
The preceptor is a registered nurse who shares knowledge and skills with the student while modeling professional practice.
The preceptor should be enthusiastic about teaching and keen to support students beginning their transition to newly graduated nurses. Preceptors assist in identifying learning opportunities, supervising the student, and providing timely, ongoing, and constructive feedback to the student.
The preceptor also plays a vital role in creating supportive learning environments, assessing the learning needs of students, and helping the students determine learning goals. Preceptors complete a minimum of one feedback evaluation per ‘set’ of shifts.
The student is responsible for understanding the objectives of the course and for creating learning goals specific to the nursing practice area of their preceptorship experience.
Students are required to follow BCCNP practice standards, maintain professional behaviour, and to be aware of and practice within the limits of their practice. Students are expected to be prepared for practice, to seek out feedback where necessary, and to ensure clear and consistent communication with the preceptor and faculty member.
Students are encouraged to seek out learning opportunities and to ask for additional assistance and support as necessary. Students are responsible for completing orientation assignments, reflective journals, and completing their practice appraisal forms.
The faculty member is a liaison between the preceptor and the student. The faculty serves as a support to the preceptor and student, and guides course expectations and objectives, and to assist in navigating any challenges that may arise.
The faculty member will connect with the student and preceptor throughout the preceptorship via in person visits or phone conversations. Preceptors and students should know that they can contact the faculty member additional support is needed. The faculty member is responsible for signing off on the student’s final evaluation.
The final evaluation is based on preceptor feedback, student practice exemplars, and evidence that the student has met the expectations as outlinedin the practice appraisal form.
